Antique Bracket Clocks
The finest antique bracket clocks have fusee movements rather than going barrel. Fusee movements are the best movements ever made for spring clocks. A fusee compensates the timekeeping on an antique bracket clock during the week. When fully wound spring driven clocks have alot of driving force. On the fusee this would then be on a small diameter barrel and over the course of the week transfer to a large diameter barrel, which compensates for the slackening off of the spring pressure. This will allow the spring driven clock to keep far better time.
In terms on value, fusee antique clocks are far more desirable than the equivalent going barrel movement. Fusee clocks can either have one train, just for the going side or timekeeping, two barrels for the strike side and timekeeping or three barrels for either music or quarter striking feature as well. Most three train clocks you will ever see are Victorian, Georgian three train musical bracket clocks are very rare.
I am providing on my personal blog a restoration masterclass on a C.1770 mahogany bracket clock soon. Please sign up for my feed at http://feeds.feedburner.com/AntiqueClocksBlog to be kept updated.
